According to an article written by Elizabeth Warmerdan, a Fresno Correctional Officer was arrested on Saturday after allegations surfaced that he had inappropriate physical contact with an inmate.
On Monday, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of 32-year-old correctional officer Akinsoji Okin on charges of having sexual contact with a female inmate.
The incident allegedly happened on Friday night.
“The incident took place inside the jail facility,” said Deputy Chris Curtice, spokesperson for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department.
Detectives began an investigation after other inmates reported seeing the inappropriate activity to jail staff, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Due to the allegations, detectives from the Sheriff’s Sexual Assault Unit were called in to handle the investigation. Investigators interviewed the inmates who reported seeing the activity, as well as another female inmate.
On Saturday, detectives interviewed Okin. He was arrested around noon when he showed up at the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office for an interview with detectives, authorities said. He was subsequently booked into the Fresno County Jail on two counts of sexual contact with a confined adult, which are felony charges.
Okin has since posted bail and is now out of jail. Detectives do not believe that any other inmates were involved in the incident. Okin has been an employee at the Sheriff’s Office for six years.
The case has been sent to the District Attorney’s Office for review. They will decide whether to file charges against Okin.
